The end of the EU? Fears grow that the EU may break up in light of Covid-19 response

Senior figures inside the European Union’s gigantic bureaucracy are expressing concerns that the bloc may be on the verge of breaking apart amid a backlash against Germany and a failed response from Brussels to the Covid-19 pandemic.

EU imposed austerity, technocratic governments, enforced migrant quotas and a general divergence in values between east and west have all piled the strain on the unity of the bloc but the recent Covid-19 pandemic may be the final straw.

In an interview with CNBC EU historian Kiran Klaus Patel that in the wake of the UK’s departure from the bloc that it remains possible that Spain, Italy and Greece could all launch their own EU exit referendums.

All three countries have experienced severe economic difficulties in recent years and a rise in populism.

The predict economic depression in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic coupled with out major contentious issues such as migration and the insistence of the EU elite on the further “pooling of sovereignty” may send the nascent super-state the same way as the USSR.
