Tributes paid to woman who sadly died after getting into difficulty on Lough Derg

The alarm was raised shortly before 6.30pm on Friday when emergency services were alerted to the incident at Tumilligate in the east of the county.

Units from the Irish Coast Guard and the National Emergency Service in Killaloe were deployed to the incident. The Air Ambulance Service was also notified and an Aeromed 01 Air Ambulance based in Cork was sent to the scene.

It is understood a woman in her 50s was swimming in Tumilligate when she got into trouble. She managed to get to the pontoon and climb into it, after which she became apparently unresponsive.

Two residents rushed to her aid and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. After coastguard volunteers from nearby Killaloe arrived on the scene, they continued resuscitation efforts.

An ambulance and two rapid response units rushed to the scene and provided assistance, reports Breaking News.

The woman was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick and police confirmed she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí responded to an incident at Twomilegate, Killaloe, Co Clare yesterday evening. A woman (50s) was brought to University Hospital Limerick but has since passed away. A post-mortem will take place at a later date,” reports Breaking News.
