That ’70s Show star Danny Masterson gets 30 years to life in prison for rape charges

A US judge has sentenced 70s star Danny Masterson to 30 years in prison and life in prison for raping two women two decades ago, reports RTE.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlene F. Olmedo imposed the sentence after hearing statements from the women about the trauma the 47-year-old suffered and years of disturbing memories.

The actor, who has been in custody since May, appeared before the court in a case. Masterson observed the women speak without any apparent reaction.

“When you raped me, you stole from me. That’s what rape is, a theft of the spirit. You are pathetic, disturbed and completely violent. The world is better off with you in prison” said one woman who Masterson was convicted of raping in 2003, reports RTE.

The second woman, Masterson, convicted of rape, said he “has not shown an ounce of remorse for the pain he caused”, reports RTE.

She told the judge: “I knew he belonged behind bars for the safety of all the women he came into contact with. I am so sorry, and I’m so upset. I wish I’d reported him sooner to the police,” reports RTE.

The defense had asked for the sentences to run concurrently on both counts and a sentence of 15 years to life. The prosecutor’s office asked for the 30 years to life in prison that Masterson deserves.

“It’s his life that will be impacted by what you decide today,” Masterson’s lawyer Shawn Holley told the judge before the sentencing, reports RTE.

“And the life of his nine-year-old daughter, who means the world to him, and to whom he means the world. He has lived an exemplary life, he has been an extraordinary father, husband, brother, son, co-worker and community servant,” Mr Holley said, reports RTE.
