Two foreigners get Irish taxpayer-funded free legal aid in court after being charged in connection with 300kg cocaine seizure

Two individuals, identified as 35-year-old Kamen Petkov and 32-year-old Nikola Penchev, who are both Bulgarian citizens, have appeared in Limerick District Court in relation to an investigation surrounding the apprehension of approximately 300kg of cocaine from a cargo ship that arrived at Foynes Port on Tuesday, reports RTE.

The charges against them include possession of a significant quantity of cocaine with intent to sell and distribute at Foynes Port on December 19th, in violation of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

An interpreter was present in court to assist the defendants throughout the proceedings, reports RTE.

The court granted them access to free legal aid when it was disclosed that they were without means and unable to work.

It was noted that both individuals did not provide any response when the charges were presented to them last night.

As such, they have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear via video link in court on December 29th, reports RTE.
