Ukrainian troops have received the M30A1 HIMARS rocket, a munition with a killzone of up to half a square mile.
Up to now, Ukraine had been using the M26 model, which delivers more than 600 bomblets on the target. M26 rockets have proven exceedingly effective in dealing with enemy infantry and soft targets caught in the open. The drawback of the M26 munition is that many of the bomblets remained unexploded on the battlefield.
The M30A1 model, also an area denial weapon, is equipped with a single explosive warhead packed with almost 200,000 tungsten spheres. A single M30A1 rocket can blanket an area equivalent to four football fields with lethal shrapnel, so any Russian soldier caught in the killzone will be instantly pulverized. Soft targets like trucks and auxiliary vehicles, mortars, etc. will suffer heavy damage or be destroyed, and their crews will be eliminated. This weapon can be set to detonate just off the ground, so trenches and other shelters will not provide any protection.
These beauties can quickly and effectively deal with advancing Russian units, so newly arrived conscripts are expected to meet a swift end.
