US President Donald Trump has backed a fresh round of economic sanctions against Iran, as a retaliatory move in response to the recent downing of a US drone.
There are conflicting reports as to where exactly the drone was shot down. Iran says the craft entered its sovereign airspace, while the US maintains the drone was fired upon over international waters.
The new sanctions are designed to deny Iran access to vital financial resources and other assets.
Meanwhile, Russia has branded the sanctions ‘illegal’ and has vowed to support Iran financially.
