”Where was the security?” – Martin said to be furious after Enoch Burke’s family confronted him on election trail in Galway

In a heated encounter on the campaign trail in Galway on Wednesday evening, May 20, members of the Burke family directly challenged Taoiseach Micheál Martin over the prolonged imprisonment of teacher Enoch Burke.

One Fianna Fáil canvasser told The Liberal:

”Well Micheal’s not at all happy about it. We had to cut the estate short because of them. Why didn’t security remove them from the Toaiseach’s path? Where was the security?”

Martina Burke, Enoch’s mother, accompanied by her son Josiah, approached Martin as he walked through a residential area canvassing for Fianna Fáil. She repeatedly demanded answers on her son’s detention, which has now exceeded 700 days. “The people of Galway don’t want transgender ideology,” she shouted, accusing the government of ignoring the case while pushing policies harmful to children.

Enoch Burke, a teacher at Wilson’s Hospital School in Westmeath, was suspended in 2022 after refusing to use a student’s preferred pronouns on religious grounds. He has been repeatedly jailed for contempt of court after defying injunctions barring him from school grounds. Supporters view his case as a stand for religious freedom and against compelled speech, while critics emphasize his repeated violations of court orders.

Martin, on his phone and flanked by aides and security, did not directly engage. He continued walking, occasionally smiling or looking away, as the family pressed him for several minutes. No immediate statement was issued by the Taoiseach’s office.

The confrontation highlights ongoing tensions in Ireland over gender ideology, parental rights, and judicial authority in the lead-up to elections. The Burke family has become a vocal presence in public protests against what they describe as state persecution of Christian beliefs.
