
A woman has died and her husband is in a serious condition in hospital after they were stabbed close to their home in Cork city last night.
They have been identified as Stella and Brian Gallagher, reports RTE
A man in his 20s has been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
Gardaà and emergency services responded to a call at a house in Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, at around 9pm, reports RTE
They discovered a 59-year-old woman critically injured on the road outside. Her husband, who is in his 60s, had also suffered severe injuries.
It is believed that both victims were stabbed multiple times.
The woman was rushed to Cork University Hospital where medical staff attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead before midnight, reports RTE
Her husband continues to be treated and is in a serious but stable condition.
The arrested man is known to the couple.
He is being held at a garda station in Cork city and may be detained for up to 24 hours, reports RTE
A Senior Investigating Officer has been assigned, and an incident room has been established at Anglesea Garda Station.
Gardaà are appealing for witnesses, especially anyone who was in the Shrewsbury Downs area of Ballinlough between 8.30pm and 9.30pm last night and who may have camera footage, to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021 452 2000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
