Woman jailed for trying to walk out of penneys with full trolley load of items worth €873

A judge has sentenced a mother-of-two to 13 months in prison for a 90-minute theft in Ennis that involved leaving a Penny’s in Ennis with a cart loaded with items worth €873, reports Breaking News.

At the Ennis Circuit Court hearing, Judge Mary Keane commented that Michelle Maughan, 38, of Stonecourt, Drumbeagle, Ennis had “a horrendous history” after being told the Ennis woman had 189 previous convictions, including 120 for stealing.

Judge Keane also said Ms Maughan suffered from “a chronic drug habit” after being in possession of a small amount of cocaine that day.

Sergeant Louis Moloney said Mrs Maughan entered Penney’s Store in Ennis’s Francis Street with a cart at 3.41pm on August 3 and soon left with goods worth €873, reports Breaking News.

Sergeant Moloney said CCTV showed Ms Maughan taking items at Lifestyle in Limerick City. Sergeant Moloney said the goods were recovered from Penney’s, Duffy’s Pharmacy and Lifestyle.

Judge Keane imposed a total of 13 months in prison on Ms Maughan – six months for stealing a penny, three months for breaking into Duffy’s Pharmacy for string and four months for handling stolen goods. Other consecutive prison sentences.

Ms Maughan’s attorney, Tara Godfrey, said her client was suffering from mental health problems at the time.

Ms Godfrey said that on the day Ms Maughan “was confused and very upset and very badly mentally ill”, reports Breaking News.
