It has been officially confirmed this afternoon that workers in the region of 70,000 on low pay will get a pay rise next year.

It is understood that by the beginning of January workers will receive a 50c, increase per hour taking the national minimum wage to €9.15. The move was confirmed by the Government earlier this afternoon after the Low Pay Commission published a report outlining the details and benefits of the increase.

The news was welcomed by the Taoiseach Enda Kenny who said the move was very much needed. The Taoiseach gave his approval to the decision after he responded to questions put to him a number of employer groups who say that workers will be put in a higher tax bracket. However the Taoiseach defended move saying the tax and welfare system will also be changed.

Mr Kenny said: “All three elements of the plan to make work pay have to reinforce each other, and that is why the Government’s response to the recommendations to the Low Pay Commission will be announced on the budget in October, alongside changes to the taxation system and the welfare system.”
