Gardaí have launched a full scale investigation after a man allegedly committed suicide after killing his wife when he drove his car the wrong way down a M1 motorway yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí believe that the man in question murdered his wife in their home at Rathmore, Hackballscross in Co Louth at approximately 3.45pm on Monday, It is then believed that the man subsequently left the scene and crashed his vehicle intentionally by driving the wrong way down a stretch of the M1 between junction 14 and 15 near Ardee. Gardaí say the woman’s remains where discovered less than two hours after a the fatal crash which killed her husband and injured thee others.

It is understood that the man intentionally drove on the wrong side of the motorway so that he could potentially end his life, it is thought that the vehicle he was driving collided with another car and truck. Gardaí have said the there occupants of the second car were brought to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital, Drogheda, but their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The house where the woman’s body was discovered, has since been sealed off so a full technical examination can take place. Garda sources have said they do not know the exact cause of the woman’s death.
