The country will see further strike action this week as staff at one of the nations biggest retailers Tesco have revealed that an “indefinite” strike will occur in some 70 stores across the Republic on Thursday after negotiations at the Workplace Relations Commission have come to a halt.

The strike action which will occur at 148 stores across the country comes after a long running dispute between both management and employees as the company plan to change the contracts of some 300 staff who were employed before 1996 that would see them receive less pay and work longer hours.

Trade union Mandate has said the pay cuts of up to 35%, and the introduction of more overtime is completely unacceptable.

The union say they fully expect to see up to 6,000 workers to go on strike on Thursday, however Tesco say they expect that just the 300 affected staff will join the industrial action.

Meanwhile the union have said the scheduled strike action is “avoidable” if the company revised their plans to change employee pay and conditions without agreement.
