A 54-yr-old man has been returned for trial at the next sitting of the Central Criminal Court, charged with the murder of Co Kerry sheep farmer Michael Gaine.

Former US soldier Mike Kelley, whose address is listed as Chapel Street in Tralee, was served with the book of evidence during this morning’s court appearance, reports RTE.

He was brought before Tralee District Court in person for the brief two-minute hearing, during which his solicitor Pat Mann confirmed that the book of evidence had been received.

Court presenter Sergeant Chris Manton applied to have Mr Kelley sent forward for trial at the next sitting of the Central Criminal Court, reports RTE.

Judge David Waters noted that Mr Kelley remains in custody and confirmed that bail is not a matter for the District Court in a murder case.

Judge Waters confirmed that Mr Kelley faces a single charge — that of murdering Mr Gaine on a date between 20 and 21 March 2025, at Carrig, Kenmare, Co Kerry, reports RTE.

Mr Kelley spoke only to confirm that he understood what an alibi was.

Free legal aid with two counsel was granted to Mr Kelley on the application of his solicitor, reports RTE.

Mr Gaine’s widow, Janice, was present in court for the hearing, accompanied by a number of other family members and friends.
