The European Commissioner for Agriculture, Phil Hogan, has issued a warning claiming that the pollution problems created by constant fuel smuggling will cause international major damage to Ireland’s food industry.
The warning comes as officers from Northern Ireland’s Customs and Revenue and the PSNI recently discovered a fuel laundering plant near a public water supply for counties Armagh and Monaghan. It is understood toxic sludge was discovered at the site, the sludge itself is created when marker is extracted during the fuel laundering process.
Mr Hogan claims that the persistent problem of fuel laundering could have severe consequences for Ireland’s food industry.
