The Pentagon has confirmed that a US-led airstrike has killed a tier one member of the al-Qaeida linked extremist group al-Shabab in Somalia.
The drone strike, carried out on July 30, reportedly killed Ali Mohamed Hussein, also known as Ali Jabal. He was the commander in chief of al-Shabab on the ground, and was responsible for masterminding guerrila-style attacks against the Somali Government in the capital, Mogadishu.
The strike is part of a wider campaign of military activity against the al-Shabab group in the region.
