UPS-203, a cargo plane en route from Philadelphia to Cologne and carrying five crew members, was forced to make an emergency landing in Shannon Airport on Friday, after smoke was detected on board.
The aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 model, was located about 60 minutes south west of Shannon Airport when the incident began.
The crew attempted to contact Shannon by radio but was unable to do so. Instead, they requested another nearby UPS plane to relay the information.
UPS-203 was carrying some specified hazardous materials, so fire crews in Shannon were on stand-by. The aircraft landed heavy but otherwise without incident.
