“A new Europe is born” Italy’s victorious Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has declared after his nationalist League Party won the country’s European Parliament elections and other populists swept the polls across the bloc.
After nationalist Eurosceptics drove a steak into the heart of the EU establishment across the bloc in this year’s European Parliament elections, Deputy PM Salvini, who has sought to forge a right-wing populist coalition across the EU, has said this herald’s a new era for the continent.
Deputy Prime Minister Salvini has said he will strive to preserve the sovereignty and national identity of Italy and the nations of Europe echoing other nationalists governments and parties in the Visegrád nations as well as in France where Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party won the day.
Salvini referenced the UK and France in particular as future allies in the struggle against the creation of an EU super-state and further centralisation of power after “Marine Le Pen swept into a leading position in France, and Nigel Farage in the UK.”
