Apple CEO to receive award from Leo Varadkar despite ongoing battle over €13 billion in unpaid taxes

The CEO of America multinational technology company, Apple, Tim Cook will visit Ireland later this month to receive an award from Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

The giant corporation employs around 6,000 people in Ireland, the majority in their Cork facility.

Apple has been embroiled in ongoing controversy in Ireland in recent years however, after an investigation by the European Commission determined that the corporation owes the Irish government €13 billion in unpaid taxes and interest accrued.

Since this determination by the EU Commission in 2016 the Irish government has been fighting a costly legal battle to stop Apple from having to pay it that taxes and interest it is owed.

Ireland already has an almost unparalleled low corporate tax rate but despite this it was found that the Irish government allowed Apple to pay even less than it was due under the current tax regime.
