Election 2016: Day of counting begins as latest figures show voter turnout is down 10% from 2011

There was a mixed response to this years General Election turnout as early reports suggest that just over 60% of the Irish people came out to cast their vote.

The figure marks a 10% decrease from the general election in 2011, but the percentage is roughly equal to that of the same-sex marriage referendum last May. It is believed that adverse weather conditions combined with the number of those who emigrated in the past 12 months caused voting numbers to decrease.

The early figures have brought a mixed reaction from people on social media, with many questioning their fellow Irish citizens as to why they did not go to their local polling stations and vote for change, although some do believe that the 60% of people who voted will make for a change of leadership in the Dáil.

Meanwhile the all important count will officially begin across the country at 9am this morning with results expected late on Sunday evening. According to various sources a hung Dáil will seem likely as none of the 4 main political parties will have enough votes to form a new government.
