Fianna Fail and Fine Gael again? Election results raise the prospect of another ‘coalition of equals’, claims Varadkar

According to Leo Varadkar, the outcome of the European and local elections raises the possibility of another “coalition of equals” between Fine Gael and Fianna áail, reports Breaking News.

According to the former Taoiseach, “an instability” may have resulted from one party being too far ahead of the other.

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael maintained their positions in the election results from last week, however Sinn Féin did not live up to expectations, reports Breaking News.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil each have four members in the European Parliament, which is a twofold increase.

With 248 council seats, Fianna Fáil emerged as the largest party in local government, closely followed by Fine Gael with 245 seats.

The outcome has increased conjecture that Simon Harris, Mr. Varadkar’s successor, may call a general election for early September.

Speaking at an event in Belfast, Mr Varadkar said: “My party winning the biggest share of the vote in both the European and local elections, which was a much better result than we had expected or hoped for. I know general elections can be a different thing, it is a very different contest,” reports Breaking News.
