Ireland agrees to take part in new EU migrant resettlement plan

The Irish Government have agreed to actively take part in a new ‘solidarity mechanism’ that will work to resettle rescued migrants across the EU.

In an announcement following a meeting in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron, confirmed that Ireland along with seven other EU member states have agreed to be part of the programme.

Speaking about the new initiative, President Macron said it would be a ‘quick’ and ‘automatic’ process when it comes to redistributing refugees across the EU.

He added that the plans were initially approved by 14 member states and in principle eight countries have agreed to take part.

Amongst the other countries to take part include France, Germany, Finland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Lithuania, and Croatia.
