According to newly published figures by the Road Safety Authority there are currently 45,000 people waiting on a driving test across the country.

The new figures which have led to fresh calls for more instructors to installed, show that on average those waiting on a test have to wait 10 weeks or more to sit their test.

According to RSA figures Galway has one of the longest waiting lists with 900 people waiting for a test.

Meanwhile figures also show that there are currently no instructors available for Co Leitrim whilst there is only one instructor in Co Roscommon.

According to The Irish Mirror newspaper, the latest figures have been heavily slammed by Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy who said the current waiting lists are unacceptable.

Mr Murphy who called for the hiring of more instructors, also said the lists are unfairly preventing those waiting from obtaining certain types of employment opportunities.

He also said the lists are costing thousands of motorists more on their insurance premiums as they are forced to hold their learners permit.
