No accommodation for 1,676 male asylum seekers, says Dept figures

The Department of Integration’s most recent statistics show that 1,676 male asylum applicants are still waiting for a State accommodation offer, reports RTE.

These numbers are related to the fact that some asylum seekers slept out in a church park in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, yesterday night.

Last night, about seventeen tents were erected at St. Mary’s Church on St. Mary’s Road with authorization.

The International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) office on Mount Street in Dublin turned away a large number of men yesterday, reports RTE.

284 previously unhoused asylum seekers were given offers of housing this week, according to Department records. On Wednesday morning, individuals who had been sleeping on the streets near Mount Street were moved to Crooksling and Citywest in Dublin.

Nevertheless, according to today’s statistics, 127 more male asylum applicants applied at IPAS this week, reports RTE.

Six of these people received housing offers from the State after a vulnerability triage, but 121 people received no accommodation at all.

New arrivals without accommodations and all male asylum seekers who have not received housing offers since December 4th of last year are given information about day programmes for the homeless but are not allowed to use homeless emergency beds, reports RTE.

Tents are accessible to them, but the section of Mount Street where many had previously set their camp is still blocked off.

Additionally, they are eligible to apply for a higher daily expenditure allowance of €75 per week, which would raise their weekly total entitlement from €38.80 when they are not receiving state-provided housing, reports RTE.
