The once peaceful nation of Sweden has been left reeling after a 12-year-old girl was shot and killed in a suburb south of the capital of Stockholm.
The child was hit with a stray bullet outside a McDonalds on Sunday morning in a gun attack linked to an ongoing gang war in the area in which she lived Expressen reports.
Sweden’s Justice Minister Morgan Johansson has dubbed the incident a “heinous atrocity,” saying he was “dismayed and shocked” to hear of the shooting while vowing to mobilize “more police” to prevent similar tragedies in the future and impose “harsher sentences” on criminals RT has reported.
The Scandinavian nation was once known for its low crime rate and such killings and the type of gang violence that has blighted the cities and suburbs of country for a number of years now was once unknown to its Nordic population.
Adam Marttinen, the legal policy spokesman for the Sweden Democrats, tweeted “Enough is Enough” casting blame on the government for failing to prevent the tragic shooting while calling for a “war” on organized crime.
However, discussing the wave of gang violence and crime that has blighted the country in the last few years is often condemned as “far right” and referencing any kind of negative issues with the Sweden’s migrant population is considered taboo.
