US President Donald Trump has used the annual State of the Union address to call for a federal ban on late-term abortions.

Recently democratic controlled states such as New York have passed legislation allowing for abortion on demand up to the time of birth.

President Trump stated
“To defend the dignity of every person, I am asking the Congress to pass legislation to prohibit the late-term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother’s womb,”

The democratic governor of Virginia has also called for “post-birth abortions” where a baby who has an illness or disability could be killed after being delivered if the mother decides she does not want it to have the chance to live.

President Trump cited Gov. Ralph Northman personally “the case of the Governor of Virginia where he basically stated he would execute a baby after birth.”

Most US states prohibit abortion after 17 weeks as it has been scientifically verified that the unborn child can feel pain and would be fully aware that it is being dismembered alive while in its own mother’s womb.

President Trump’s remarks were met with cheers and a standing ovation from Republican Senators and Congressmen as well as some democrats while most the of the opposition party, including its leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi remained seated and sneered.
