Prison inmate in Dublin slashed prison officer with sharpened toilet brush on hospital visit, court hears

A court has heard that a man serving a life sentence for murder attacked a prison guard’s face with a sharpened toilet brush after the officer had taken him out of custody for an X-ray, reports Breaking News.

On May 8, 2023, 26-year-old Graham McEvoy of Captains’ Road, Crumlin, Dublin 12, entered a guilty plea to assault and cause harm to a prison guard outside the Swiftcare Clinic in Smithfield.

During McEvoy’s X-ray visit at the clinic, he was freed from handcuffs and sitting in the waiting prison vehicle when he rushed at jail guards, attempting to get free, as the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard on Thursday.

Witnesses said that McEvoy yelled: “Just let me go, I’ll stab the face-off you, I’ll stab you to death,” before he lashed out at an officer, reports Breaking News.

McEvoy acknowledged pulling out a sharpened toilet brush and a white plastic homemade weapon, but two further counts of making threats to murder and trying to elude legal authorities were taken into account.

Noting that the law did not permit her to impose a sentence concurrent to the one McEvoy is currently serving for murder, Judge Pauline Codd sentenced him to four years in jail, reports Breaking News.

Following a week-long trial at the Central Criminal Court in 2017, McEvoy was found guilty of killing Paul Curran, 23, by stabbing him to death at Seagull House, Crumlin Road, on July 16, 2016.

He was given a life sentence and is incarcerated at Midlands Prison at the moment, reports Breaking News.
