55% of all people sent to jail in Ireland last year were put there for not paying fines, it has emerged today.

These people were imprisoned for very short periods, but were left with a criminal record, which may cause problems when travelling or living abroad.

New legislation is now being put in place to avoid sending someone to prison over a fine. Instead, paying in instalments, recovery orders, or attachments on earnings may be used as alternatives.
