Dublin’s city centre traffic was this evening severely disrupted by a sinkhole that opened up on Dame Street.
The hole is about three feet in diameter. A Garda exclusion zone has been established around it while crews work on covering it up and try to work out what caused it.
An engineer said that the likely cause was water damage to the foundations beneath the road surface.
Westbound traffic on Dame Street is suspended at present between George Street and Parliament Street. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
