Taoiseach says he wants IS bride Lisa Smith and her daughter to return home

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said that he wants IS bride Lisa Smith to return home to Ireland.

Speaking to RTÉ’s Today with Sean O’Rourke programme, the Taoiseach said that he would like to see Ms Smith’s two-year-old daughter to return to Ireland.

Although the Taoiseach did admit that there are a number of issues in returning the pair to Ireland, he did state that he doesn’t want to separate the two and would welcome them back to Ireland.

Varadkar also told the programme that he definitely wants to bring Ms Smith’s daughter to Ireland but he wouldn’t be in favour of a scenario where both she and Ms Smith were separated.

The Taoiseach who was responding to latest developments in regards to Ms Smith’s detention at a Syrian refugee camp, told the programme that the case is not a simple matter and there a number of factors to consider if the Government were to bring Ms Smith and her daughter home.

He added that the Irish Government is currently not in a position to send a helicopter to the region as it is a war zone and therefore the safety of Irish military and diplomats would be put at great risk.

The Taoiseach also revealed that if Ms Smith were to return home she would most definitely have to be investigated in order to make sure she isn’t a threat.

The Taoiseach’s comments come after Ms Smith recently revealed in an interview with RTÉ that she doesn’t think that she will ever return to Ireland.
