The Traditional Christmas Card – is it becoming a dying art? Recent survey reveals that people elect to send emoji’s instead

The world is forever evolving especially when it comes to communications with new technology and gadgets invented on a regular basis, which leaves past traditional methods of communicating for dust and never really to be used again.

Although the new technology makes our lives a lot easier there are still some traditions we would like to see continue such as the age-old one of sending Christmas cards. The once popular tradition which saw post offices across the country literally inundated with envelopes containing personalised cards with messages ear marked for loved ones and friends.

However new research from Albelli suggests that the writing of festive cards is becoming somewhat of a dying art in recent years with many of the Irish public electing to send emoji texts instead. The recent survey found that the sending of Christmas cards is still fairly popular amongst the elderly, it seems that the tradition is lost amongst those under the age of 35 who say they could not be bothered to send a Christmas card to family or friends. The survey found that of the people surveyed under the age of 35, 1 in 10 claimed they haven’t posted a Christmas card in over four years, although a further 15% of those surveyed admitted that they do receive Christmas cards but they elect not to send one back.

The research found that the cost of cards and postage was the main reason people did not feel the need to send a card at christmas, whilst others felt that the standard Christmas card did not offer a chance to compose a personal message for a loved one or a friend, were as there technical counterparts did.

Although it seems the Christmas card is not entirely doomed as a massive 60% of people surveyed said they were more than happy to receive a Christmas card.
