US town rejects solar panels over fear that they ‘suck up all the energy from the sun’

solA US town has rejected a proposal for a solar farm over fears that they would ‘suck up all the energy from the sun’. Inhabitants of Woodland, North Carolina were not happy with the proposal to allow Strata Solar Company to build a solar farm off Highway 258.  Duriing a Town Council meeting, one local man, Bobby Mann, said solar farms would suck up all the energy from the sun and businesses would not go to Woodland.

Jane Mann, a retired science teacher, said she feared the panels would prevent plants in the area from photosynthesizing, stopping them from growing. Ms Mann said she had seen areas near solar panels where plants are brown and dead because they did not get enough sunlight. She also blamed the solar panels on the high number of cancer deaths in the area.“I want to know what’s going to happen,” Ms Mann said. “I want information. Enough is enough. I don’t see the profit for the town.”

Mary Hobbs said she had watched the area become a ghost town. She said her home was now surrounded by solar farms and no longer worth its value. The council later voted for a moratorium on future solar farms.
