Today, the World Health Organisation, UN’s body dealing with worldwide public health issues and concerns, annouced that the consumption of processed meats is a “definite” cause of cancer. They also indicated that red meat is a “probable” cause.

The evidence that backs their statement has been building for deaces of research and even though it was suspected for a long time, the announcement is very significant, and it’s expected to carry weight in decition making processes, regulators and governments throught the world.

To clarify, “processed meat” is meat that is not sold fresh, but instead it’s smoked, curated, salted or preserved in some way (for example: bacon, sausages, parma ham, pastrami, etc). These type of products were clasified as “carcirogens”, the same category in which alcohol and smoking have been for years.

The current limit for daily meat consumption in the UK is 70 gr. a day (around 2 sausages), however, it might be time to rethink their daily meat (especially process meat) intake for many people.
