The Fianna Fail party have slammed the coalition government on how they are dealing with the current homelessness crisis. The party say that the Taoiseach and his fellow TD’s rather have a “hands off approach” in dealing with issue.

The party’s comments come after new figures published recently by from the Department of the Environment shows that the number of homeless families in Ireland has risen by a staggering 76% since January.

The party say that the government have shamefully taken no action action during the summer to deal with the crisis, and that many families have been forced out of their homes as consequence.

Fianna Fail spokesman Barry Cowen has claimed the figures make for stark viewing, Mr Cowen said: “They are quite shocking but not very alarming. “It reflects what we’ve been seeing on the ground in the last 12 or 18 months and we’ve been calling for various measures to be taken to address, but unfortunately no measures have been forthcoming.”

He added: “I hear that the Taoiseach is meeting the Minister for the Environment to discuss the issue. The time for action is now.”
