The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has ruled out implementing a rent freeze despite despite a recent report revealing that the average cost nationally is €1,400.
Speaking in the Dáil on Tuesday, the Taoiseach said a rent freeze is not the answer as it would lead to less supply.
The Taoiseach’s comments come after Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil supported the idea of a rent freeze following the publication of the report from property website Daft.ie.
However the Taoiseach stated that implementing such a freeze would provide a solution to the problem, but instead the main focus should be on supplying more housing.
He added that the introduction of such a freeze would not be beneficial to those who need to rent for the first time as it would be highly difficult.
