In what can only be described as an incredible act of self-sacrifice, a volunteer firefighter kept working to save those trapped by the Australian wildfires even while his own home was burning.

According to the Mirror, Russell Scholes was aware that his own house was on fire but continued with the firefighters plan which involved moving from one house to the next in a bid to do all they could to save as many homes as possible.

Scholes is said to have cried when he went back to his home, but showed amazing generosity about the whole situation, saying:

“My family and my animals are safe and we have protected the community – for me, that is more important that the house.”

Scholes’ story proves that even in the worst crisis, people will always support each other more than anyone could expect.
