German mobile app developers, Semic RF, have been working on a way to to use mobile phone technology as a diagnostic tool for Covid-19 and they now have a working and proven solution.

The Semic EyeScan mobile phone app uses a photo of your eyes to identify a common symptomatic inflammation known as “pink eye”. Pink eye also known as conjunctivitis is linked to Covid-19 symptoms.

According to the Metro, Semic RF has managed to isolate Covid-19 from more than two million different shades of pink. The Semic RF managing director Wolfgang Gruber says the app has already been tested on over 70,000 people.

Mr Gruber added: ‘You take your app, take a picture of both eyes, send it for evaluation and then you can have the evaluated result stored as a QR code on the tested person’s smartphone.’

However, there is a note of caution. The World Health Organisation says conjunctivitis is one of the less common symptoms of Covid-19, so it is possible some people could still slip through the net.
