Covert employee surveillance software to be used more by employers in the workplace post-Covid

For most people, the novelty of working from home, away from the prying eyes of the manager has now worn off and both employees and employers are looking forward to getting back to normal.

But a lot has changed in the workplace in just 12 months.
Many employees who are working at home have been been using work computers with “employee surveillance” software pre-installed. The employees may not be aware fo the software which is often hidden. Sometimes employers will call the surveillance software trendy names like “metrics software” or “performance software” which go way beyond Clock-in / Clock-out software.

According to FastCompany, the trend in using employee surveillance software is set to rise exponentially, even when temporary remote workers return to the company premises.
In the US, employers are entitled to monitor internet activity, social media, screen content, and keystrokes. However, they are not allowed to monitor private messages and email accounts that are password protected and sent from a personal device unless consent is given.

The general advice is always to assume you are being monitored by management whilst at work, whether you are at home or in the office. That way, you can better protect your personal privacy.
