All polling stations across the country have now shut their doors, with many reporting turnouts upwards of 70%.

Election 2016 is said to be one of the most hotly contested in Irish history, with many big names expected to fall by the wayside as the people of Ireland had enough of imposed austerity and broken promises.

Counting of votes will commence at 9am tomorrow morning, with provisional results expected in late afternoon.
