Comedian Brendan O’Carroll offered a very generous gesture today when he phoned into Liveline and offered to pay for the funeral of a Polish man who died in Ennis on Christmas Day.
The body of the 51-year-old man, who had formerly been homeless, has been sitting “unclaimed” in a morgue in Limerick since December.
A Limerick undertaker then called Joe Duffy offering to look after the burial arrangements when he heard of O’Carroll’s offer.
Undertaker Cyril Cusack said “we’ll give the man a dignified burial, one that everyone deserves”.
Clare County Council, which has offered a plot for the man, contacted the programme to say it would do its “utmost” to see the man properly buried.
O’Carroll is on a break in his home in Florida and contacted the show from there when he heard of the tragic set of circumstances.
