Ireland may soon loIreland may lose its all important veto in the European Union’s decision making process on key issues such as foreign and defence policy and taxation as German and French government seek to remove any remaining blockages to the superstate agenda post-Brexit.

In reaction to Hungary blocking EU foreign policy statements last week Germany’s foreign minister, Heiko Maas, said:

“We can no longer be held hostage by those who paralyse European foreign policy through their vetoes,” Mr Maas said, those states who exercise their national sovereignty were “playing with Europe’s cohesion”.

The German Minister added “I therefore say quite openly: the veto must go – even if that means we too can be outvoted.”
