Politicians drank €10,000 of subsidised pints of Guinness in Dail bar

Thirsty senators and TDs made the most of Leinster House’s reduced alcohol costs last year, as evidenced by new data showing that over 10,000 pints of Guinness were consumed in the Dail’s two bars, reports The Mirror.

In 2023, 10,031 pints of plain were consumed at the two licenced establishments of the Houses of the Oireachtas, with Guinness being the most popular beverage among legislators and employees of Leinster House.

Furthermore, it’s evident that our elected officials are receiving better value for their money than the typical patron because a pint of the black stuff at Leinster House only costs €5.20, a small fraction of the cost of neighbouring pubs in the city centre, reports The Mirror.

Cork Dry Gin was the preferred spirit, with 1,620 measures sold, while Heineken was the second most popular draft beer, with 1,869 pints downed.

Another popular item was wine, with 4,102 glasses of the house brand “Oireachtas” selling for €6.40 a glass between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023.

Customers of the pub spent around €360,000 [€359,497.89] last year, according to data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, reports The Mirror.
