Why the Leprechaun is a symbol of good luck

Whilst there are plenty of different things that can be associated with Ireland, the leprechaun is perhaps one of the most famous of things that are closely linked with the Emerald Isle.

The mythical creature is synonymous with popular Irish culture and is known around the world as a symbol that can bring those who see one with luck. Indeed, whilst there are strong suggestions that a leprechaun is not real, old Irish tales have suggested that the character is real and were spotted back in the 700s.

It should be noted that almost every symbol that can be found on an Irish-themed slot game at an online casino Ireland has to offer feature an element of luck, with horseshoes and four-leaf clovers all considered to be rather lucky.

Why are Leprechauns considered lucky?

There are a number of different tales that have been told regarding the mythical leprechaun character, however each of them tell how they are rather wealthy individuals and why being able to get one can be considered to be rather lucky.

Legend has it that all leprechauns are accomplished shoemakers that have been able to make themselves wealthy with the earnings that they have been able to acquire. It is claimed that each of the leprechauns are to have a pot of gold, which can only be found at the bottom of a rainbow. Indeed, anyone who has gone looking for where a rainbow starts and finishes will know it is near impossible to locate its exact location, thus making it hard for the pot of gold that allegedly sits at the bottom to be found.

Catching a leprechaun is considered lucky

Whilst there will be some debate about whether leprechauns still exist today, there is no doubting that it will be extremely hard to capture one if they are ever seen.

Leprechauns are crafty little individuals who are always depicted as being seemingly one trick and step ahead of a human being, as they can escape and get away from the clutches of one without any possibility. Indeed, it is said that if an individual has the “luck of the Irish” and can capture one, then they will try and bargain for their release.

The legend that appears to be common when one of these mythical characters is caught is that they will offer their capturer with three wishes that they can grant. Indeed, they offer this as a way to trade for their freedom, thus potentially making those individuals incredibly lucky in the process.

However, there are legends that have been told suggesting that the leprechauns who grant these wishes can take them rather literally, so it is wise to be careful with how the wish is worded. One legend claims that one man had wished to become the king of a tropical island, which was granted. However, he would not have banked on it being on an island whereby he was alone.

Conclusion

Of course, everyone will have their own opinions about whether a leprechaun is a real thing or if they are just a mythical character from old Irish folklore tales, but what can not be debated is the fact that they will always be considered to be a symbol of luck.
