Review to decriminalise cannabis in London launched by Sadiq Khan as part of his election manifesto

The Labour mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has proposed setting up a London Drugs Commission to review the decriminalisation of Cannabis as part of his election manifesto.

Mr Khan, faces an election in May ruled out the decriminalisation of class-A drugs such as heroin and cocaine.

The Metro reports that the illegal drug trade in the UK is estimated to cost society £19bn per year with an estimated 41,900 people across England and Wales being charged with drug-related offences last year.

Mr Khan’s announcement puts him at odds with his Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer who has said previously that he does not support decriminalising the possession of cannabis and believes the current laws are sufficient.
